"It swings
like hell!"
(A cd-record from the tour
of England is in production.
This text is from the cover.) |
For a
Swedish band playing old style jazz is
going on a
tour of England like going back into the history started by Humphrey
Lyttelton, Chris Barber, Ken Colyer and others in the 1950’s. It’s a
great feeling to play in some of the same halls and for the same kind
of genuine audience as they did (and some of them still do).
The Red Wing Band of Gothenburg did that
in
September 2007 on a tour arranged by Brian Carrick, one of our personal
favorites in the New Orleans music of today and our honoured guest at
many gigs in Sweden. In eleven days we played nine gigs at jazz clubs
in southern England.
Such a tour is also a great adventure.
Travelling with all our instruments and
luggage in a
VW-bus, driven by the wild Danish drummer Ronald Andersen (mostly known
as a fine swing guitarist), following Brian’s car and his new gps,
whose mysterious orders made us see a lot of the beautiful landscape.
But thanks to a lot of inns we did survive and sooner or later always
landed on the right spot reaching the gig for the night in almost
acceptable condition.
Then, on stage, it also seemed that the
experienced
English audience appreciated our music.
Most of all the beautiful voice of young Eva Karin
Andersson, whose singing and swinging of the old tunes in a natural New
Orleans style really is something extra.
Then our unorthodox blowing section with
Brian
Carrick and Lasse Collin altering on clarinets and tenor saxes in their
very personal way, together with Hans Zakrisson often playing the lead
on his smooth trombone. This setting gave an extra swing to the music
and the band a very special sound.
Sune Linder and his twentytwo fingers on
the piano is also a rare attraction.
And then the mean rhythm machine behind
it all with
Mysto Werdell on the banjo, Leif Melldahl, bass, and Ronald Andersen on
his NO-drums. They sure gave the hornmen as much energy as they could
take.
”It swings like hell”, was the usual
comments.
The idea to make a record came from
Brian calling us
up in the bus on his mobile, telling us he had Peter Kings
waiting
to record us.
Therefore this cd is recorded in Little
Witley
Village Jazz Club, September 26th 2007, the eighth gig on the tour of
England that Red Wing, Eva Karin, Brian and Ronald did together.
What we played that night in all those extra
recording
mikes, was maybe not the best of the tour, but it gives a good taste of
the kind of jazz we like to play.
It’s not about perfection, it’s improvisation and
feeling
and swing, and that’s what this cd hopefully gives to you.
Enjoy!
The Red Wing/Brian Carrick cd is meant to be ready
in June. Waiting for this occasion you can listen to some of
our music
here.

Borås
Tidning 30
augusti 2007:
Lyckad
jazzkväll
Club
Jazz Intime:
RED WING
Scen: Plaza, Borås
Club
Jazz Intime
inledde i onsdags sin höstsäsong. Det blev en mycket lyckad start. På
scen: orkestern Red Wing.
Hans
Zakrisson hade många goda trombonsolon under kvällen. I My Little Girl
minnesvärt är hennes framförande av den sakrala His Eye Is On The
Sparrow.
Walter
Donaldson har
gjort många goda melodier. En vacker, mera sällan hörd, presenterade
Red Wing med sång av Eva Karin; A Thousand Good Nights. Med den gamla
spiritualsången I'm Going Home To See My Lord avslutade Red Wing en

Thanks for a cosy
festival!
Alingsås
Jazz Festival is a cosy festival of the right size in a nice town. This
year the festival was April 27-29 and held for the 7th time. Thanks to
the organizers in Alingsås Jazz Society there were a lot of good bands,
all playing well, and a great enthusiastic audience who seemed to like
the music and having a good time. As last year The Red Wing Band both
started and finished the festival. On Friday we played an free concert
outdoors on the marketplace, where the festival had a scene for the
first time. On Saturday we had two concerts with our ordinary super
guest star Brian Carrick on the main scene in First Grand Hotel. And on
Sunday we finished the whole festival with a gospel concert in
Christinae Church together with the choir Vox Femina. The music was
swinging, there was spring in the air, the sun shined bright on the
little lucky town, and a great lot of beer was consumed...

Very
fine band indeed!
Red
Wing Band with
Brian Carrick and Ronald Andersen at the
Riverboat Jazz
Festival in Silkeborg, Denmark, June 23-24, 2006.
Photo: Tove Feragen.
One
of the largest festivals for classic jazz is the Riverboat Jazz
Festival in Silkeborg, Denmark. This year it was 40 years since the
first festival was arranged and there were over 60 bands on the line
up. Amongst them Red Wing Band with Brian Carrick, the master of New
Orleans-clarinet, and Ronald Andersen on drums, maybe more known as the
master of swingguitar. And not to forget the young vocalist of the
band, Eva Karin Andersson, whos happy voice sat the audience on fire.
The band played four sessions in crowded tents, around 1000 people each
time, and made a great succes with its rocking style, vitality and
swing. Some people said that Red Wing was one of the best bands in
show, or as Göran Hansson wrote in Blog Skaneland: "The
jazz festival in Silkeborg was fantastic. Brian Carrick
& Red Wing
was the best. All the band members except Brian Carrick were
from Göteborg and Alingsås. Very fine band indeed!"
i Silkeborg, Danmark.
Blog Skaneland: "The
jazz festival in Silkeborg was fantastic. Brian Carrick
& Red Wing
was the best. All the band members except Brian Carrick were
from Göteborg and Alingsås. Very fine band indeed!"
Now
you can listen to Red Wing playing "Say si si" in Silkeborg. The track
is taken
from the CD (2-CD) "Riverboat Jazz Festival 2006", just released. On
the CD
are 29 tracks
from the programme on this years Riverboat Jazz Festival.
Listen to Red Wing here. Read more about the CD on Riverboat
Jazz Festival's site here.
